MVHS grad makes cover of Time magazine
The June 25 edition of Time magazine features Mountain View High School alumnus Jose Antonio Vargas on the cover.
Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who outed himself as an undocumented immigrant last year, wrote the magazine’s cover story on his yearlong quest to “Define American” by listening and collaborating with other undocumented residents.
Vargas’ article spotlights the growing immigration-rights movement and the complexities of the citizenship process. The cover features a photo of Vargas with other undocumented immigrants under the title “We Are Americans, Just not legally.” The online package features a video with Vargas sharing his journey.
In the video, Vargas shows photographs of his mentor Rich Fischer, former Mountain View Los Altos Union High School superintendent; Judy Hannemann, current MVLA board member; and Pat Hyland, former Mountain View High principal. He identifies them as his support team and notes that all undocumented immigrants need such help to enable their stays in the U.S.
“Illegal immigration is not just about people like me,” Vargas said. “If it weren’t for teachers, pastors, neighbors, parents and friends – all of these American citizens that help people like me – we couldn’t get through it.”
