Pear's 'Metamorphoses' closes Sunday in Mtn. View

Pear Avenue Theatre’s production of "Metamorphoses" is scheduled to close Sunday in Mountain View.

Mary Zimmerman’s play is a reworking of Ovid’s classic tales of gods and mortals. It consists of a series of Greco-Roman myths told by one character to another (somewhat like Geoffrey Chaucer’s "Canterbury Tales") and acted out for a larger audience. Each of the stories focuses on some physical or psychological metamorphosis, or change.

Embedded in the play is the constant juxtaposition of the classical and the contemporary. Zimmerman's version renders the classic myths in more contemporary language and psychology while retaining a connection with forces and mysteries beyond the human realm, represented by the gods and goddesses.

Zimmerman is a professor at Northwestern University, recipient of a 1998 MacArthur Fellowship (a "genius grant") and creator of many stage works rooted in myth.

Jeanie Forte directs a cast featuring Tom Ammon, Kevin Hsieh, Bill C. Jones, Kristen Lo, Blaze Mancillas, Shannon Stowe, Maddie Sykes, Diane Tasca, Patricia Tyler and Jake Vincent

Performances are scheduled 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at 1220 Pear Ave. Tickets are $12-$30.
