Children's Corner celebrates 25th anniversary

Children's Corner Program Director Christine Losch and teachers Laura Bernal and Jan Allen together have 49 years of service at Children's Corner. The play-based preschool is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a picnic in Shoup Park Saturday.

Los Altos-Mountain View Children's Corner, one of the area's oldest non-profit preschools, will celebrate its 25th anniversary, 3-5 p.m., Saturday, at Shoup Park.

The picnic will feature children's activities including face painting, a visit from Dottie the Clown, a magic show, balloon animals and hats. Children's Corner Executive Director Gini Brown and long-term board president Barbara Driscoll will present a program commemorating the preschool's 25 years.

Alumni parents and former preschoolers are welcome. Tickets, at $10 a family including a raffle ticket, must be purchased in advance. Call 948-8950.

Prizes will include gift certificates from local merchants and baskets coordinated by current Children's Corner families. Food and beverages will be provided.

The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women founded children's Corner in 1979. Its first two years were spent in the Los Altos Lutheran Church, where a staff of three teachers taught 15 students. In 1981, in response to community demand and under contract with the Los Altos Recreation Department, Children's Corner moved to its present location at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. In 1984, the preschool reached its present size, about 300 families.

The preschool provides play-based learning that emphasizes social development, discovery and free exploration. The school's mission is to provide a safe, relaxed and unhurried atmosphere that allows children to become involved in the activities that interest them.

"We want to be a haven from the high-stress world," said Brown, who has been Children's Corner's director for nearly all of its 25 years. "We want this to be a place where children's personalities and abilities can flower."
