Bullis Charter School will receive an additional classroom on its campus this fall in exchange for its approval of the Los Altos School District’s request to extend the deadline for the district’s annual facilities offer.
Proposition 39, passed in 2000, mandates that school districts provide “reasonably equivalent space” for charter school students who reside within district boundaries. The school district allots the charter school space on the Egan Junior High School site on West Portola Avenue.
The deadline extension allows the district time to amend the facilities allotment based on the governor’s May revision of the school budget. After the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees passed the proposal with a 3-2 vote Sept. 28, the charter school board of directors ratified it 5-0 (two members were absent) Oct. 4.
The joint agreement is a symbolic step forward in improving the relationship between the district and the charter school.
Several members from both boards said they hope the agreement is a stepping stone in rebuilding their relationship, which has been fraught for years with controversy and litigation. The charter school is currently appealing a legal decision that the district won last year involving facilities.
