Springer School adopts Early Literacy program

Springer School has introduced the Early Literacy program to its students. Springer is the second school in the Los Altos School District to use the non-profit program as an additional learning tool. Initiated by Duane Stauffer of Los Altos and sponsored by Avenidas, Early Literacy aims to "teach kids who are not at grade level and get them to grade-level reading," according to Stauffer in the Oct. 3 Town Crier.

Al Stratz, Bob Staudt, Barbara Tooley and Jackie Wolfe started the program at Springer under the direction of Principal Bob Celeste. The volunteers assist students, selected by teachers, on a one-on-one basis twice a week, helping them to work their way toward grade-level literacy.

The Early Literacy program hopes to attract 40 new volunteers by year's end.

For more information, call Duane Stauffer at 948-7268.

MVHS clubs sponsor Christmas tree lot

Mountain View High School's Iwata Club and Athletic Department are running a Christmas tree lot through Friday in the parking lot of the Safeway in downtown Los Altos. Each tree purchased comes with coupons worth hundreds of dollars at local merchants.

All proceeds go to Mountain View's clubs and after-school programs. When requested, with the purchase of a tree, the Spartan Tree Lot will make a donation to any school or other local youth organization of your choice.

The lot, located at 160 First St., is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekends and 3-7:30 p.m. weekdays.
