Los Altos resident Claire Jensen, front, wins the final of three sprint races over three days at USA Cyclings Junior National Track Cycling Championship last month in Los Angeles.

Los Altos resident Claire Jensen won USA Cycling's Junior National Track Cycling Championship for 10- to 12-year-old girls Aug. 16 in Los Angeles.

Jensen, a student at St. Simon School, battled Jacqueline Chen (San Marino) for the lead during the bell lap of the scratch race – which capped three days of competition – and it was a close race until Jensen took control in the second-to-last lap.

Jensen's victory earned her a gold medal and the national title with an overall score of 17 points. Chen took the silver with 15 points.

Jensen has been racing for three years at the Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose, where her dad, Rob Jensen, is one of the coaches. She trains in and around Los Altos, riding several days a week.

In the boys competition of the national championship, Jensen's classmate Matthew Valencia of Los Altos finished fifth.
