Incumbents won't face challengers for El Camino Hospital board

The Nov. 2 election is 12 weeks away, but it’s already a win-win situation for hospital board of directors David Reeder and Dr. Patricia A. Einarson.

The two directors, whose terms expire at the end of the year, won’t face any challengers for their positions. Reeder and Einarson were the only candidates to file papers with the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters by the Aug. 6 deadline.

The end of the candidate filing period precedes El Camino’s announcement last week that it will eliminate 140 full-time positions by the end of October due to budget concerns.

A Los Altos resident and business operations manager at Oracle, Reeder was appointed a director in 1999 and has twice won election to the five-member board. He is the longest-serving director on the board.

In April, the hospital board appointed Einarson to the seat vacated by Mark O’Connor in February. Einarson is a family-practice physician specializing in child, adolescent and adult eating disorders.

The board, including John Zoglin, Uwe Kladde and Chairman Wesley Alles, is working with staff and consultants to scrutinize the budget in an attempt to cut at least $60 million in expenditures through its recently implemented ACE program – Accelerating Continuous Excellence.

“We have to become a more productive organization,” Reeder said. “At the same time, we have to work for providing the best quality of care.”

Einarson said the hospital faces several challenges – including competition and increasing innovation in an area that thrives on high-tech.

“There are so many interesting possibilities for El Camino Hospital right now,” she said. “And ultimately, of course, it’s what’s best for the patient.”

Members of the board serve four-year terms. Alles, Zoglin and Kladde’s terms expire November 2012. There are no term limits for hospital board directors.
