USPS offers tips on property-tax payments
Residents concerned about whether the Santa Clara County Tax Collector's Office will receive their mailed property tax payments in a timely manner can get a helping hand from the post office, according to local U.S. Postal Service (USPS) representatives.
Taxpayers submitting property-tax payments via mail can protect themselves from costly late penalties by purchasing a certificate of mailing – proof that the mail payment was accepted on that date. Taxpayers may also request that employees at their local USPS office hand cancel the payment. Hand canceling requires USPS officials to manually “cancel out” postage so that it can’t be used again by hand-stamping it with a date.
