Cyclist and car collide at Miramonte and Covington

A Los Altos man driving a Volvo station wagon collided with a 20-year-old female cyclist at the Miramonte Avenue and Covington Road intersection Wednesday morning during rush hour. The accident sent the woman to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Both the cyclist, a Los Altos resident traveling north on Miramonte, and the driver, a 41-year-old Los Altos resident heading west on Covington, had stopped at the stop sign but Sgt. Cameron Shearer said the driver didn’t see the cyclist when they both proceeded.

The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m.

When the two collided, the cyclist rolled onto the driver’s hood and later complained to police of back pain.

The intersection, which is near Blach School and St. Francis High School, is notoriously congested during weekday mornings when school is in session.

No citations were issued, Shearer said.

Citywide, Shearer said traffic accidents increase when school resumes.

“When school starts, there are more accidents and more traffic complaints,” he said. “The problem is not only volume – it’s condensed in small amount of time.”

A student walking across Almond Avenue to Los Altos High School went to the hospital Aug. 31 with non life-threatening injuries after the driver of an SUV struck her. Police at the time said the driver, a 50-year-old Hayward man dropping off a student, didn’t see the 17-year-old girl.
