City manager Schmitz to leave

Los Altos City Manager Douglas J. Schmitz announced his retirement Thursday, after four years on the job. Schmitz said his last day will be March 31, 2012.

“Next month will mark the conclusion of my 30th year as a city manager,” Schmitz stated. “I am leaving a municipal organization that has an outstanding staff, is in excellent financial condition, and has a plethora of long range plans to implement in the years ahead. These past four years have been personally fulfilling and professionally satisfying. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the community of Los Altos.”

“During his tenure, Doug has consistently exceeded the City Council’s high expectations of him,” said Mayor Ron Packard. “He has been exactly who the City needed to address the challenges and opportunities before us. His vision, creativity, communications skills and management expertise have truly transformed Los Altos. We wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement. Until that day comes, we are confident that Doug will continue to do his usual outstanding job, and anticipate a smooth transition to the next Los Altos City Manager.”

Schmitz joined the Los Altos city staff on Sept. 7, 2007. Prior to coming to Los Altos, Schmitz served as City Manager and Executive Director of Redevelopment for the City of Lake Oswego. Oregon for 15 years, and before that as City Administrator of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California for nine years, while Clint Eastwood was mayor.
