As Los Altos crews began demolition Tuesday on the old Quonset hut-style building at the corner of Main and First streets, the building's history began to emerge: A sign for Gordon's Fine Foods, a store that closed decades ago. According to city historian Don McDonald, the business opened in January 1948.
The city is demolishing the building to clear the way for a lease or sale of the land to a developer. Los Altos Engineering Services Manager Jim Gustafson said the city will try to preserve the sign after consulting with the city's historical commission.
"When doing demolitions, you sometimes discover these old relics," he said.
