The Los Altos High School Eagle Marching Band won the High Music Award at the Western Band Association 2011 Band Championship Saturday in Thousand Oaks.

Competing against 43 bands from California and Arizona, Los Altos marched away with the award for the best performance and the most difficult music composition.

The 80-plus musicians’ winning performance included selections from Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Philip Glass and Queen. Instrumental Music Director Ted Ferrucci said the music included some of the most difficult pieces performed at the event.

The band competed in four other contests this fall. At three, the Eagles took first place in the AAA division. At a competition hosted by Dublin High School, the band won the Sweepstakes Award – first place in all three divisions.

The Los Altos High School Eagle Marching Band is scheduled to march 6 p.m. Sunday in the Festival of Lights Parade in downtown Los Altos.
