The holidays bring opportunities for criminals on the hunt for packages left on doorsteps. To thwart thieves, the Mountain View Police Department recommends that homeowners invest in security cameras.

The holiday season – when porch pirates are most active – is just around the corner. Home security cameras are one option for protecting delivered “booty,” but not all systems are optimally set up. Last week, the Mountain View Police Department shared tips to help area residents.

“One of the most common questions we see from our community is about home security cameras, particularly when it comes to tips on what kinds of cameras to purchase or where to place them,” MVPD spokeswoman Katie Nelson wrote in a department press release.

Home security footage can “help immensely” in an investigation, she wrote.

MVPD’s list of tips and tricks:

• Direct one camera at the front door and one camera at the street.

• Place cameras at major home entry points.

• Consider systems that offer audio and 1080p (high-definition) resolution.

• Consider night vision and motion-activated detection capabilities.
