Firefighters to work to contain a fire that ignited Monday evening in the 300 block of Hawthorne Avenue in Los Altos.

A Los Altos resident sustained minor injuries Monday night (Sept. 30) when a home near the downtown triangle caught fire.

According to a Santa Clara County Fire Department incident report, the fire ignited at approximately 9:15 p.m. at a single-story residence in the 300 block of Hawthorne Avenue, not far from the Los Altos Nursery. All occupants managed to evacuate before rescuers arrived. A team of 26 firefighters managed to contain the blaze within 40 minutes, but flames damaged 50% of the structure and there is smoke damage throughout. The incident has caused the displacement of five residents, who will be assisted by the Red Cross as needed.

The only reported injury is that of one resident who suffered smoke-related complications but declined treatment, according to the report.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the incident report includes a warning about using or storing household chemicals away from flame and heat sources.
