Los Altos detectives follow leads after crime spree last week

Four suspects broke into a home on the 1400 block of Wessex Avenue in Los Altos through an unlocked door at approximately 3 a.m. July 10. That same morning, suspects stole a garage door opener from a car on the 1300 block of Chelsea Drive, gained entry through the carpark and took off with a vehicle. Somewhere in between, suspects rummaged through an estimated 12 or 13 cars in the same neighborhood, according to Los Altos Police Sgt. Steve Spillman.

Although the reports from the incidents were filed separately, the timeline and proximity of the crimes – also reported on El Sereno Avenue, Havenhurst Drive and Christina Drive – led investigators to speculate that the incidents were related.

Beyond speculation came video evidence: Male suspects, likely in their late teens or early 20s, were captured on home surveillance footage at at least two of the crime scenes, Spillman said.

“These guys never operate in one particular area,” Spillman said. “We don’t know where else they specifically hit.”

Capt. Scott McCrossin added that he was informed two stolen vehicles were recovered the following evening – one on El Sereno Avenue and the other on Martin Avenue.

“When you have stolen vehicles, a lot of the time (suspects) are dumping one car they stole from somewhere else and picking up a new one,” McCrossin said.

No information is known about the suspects’ vehicle at this time and no arrests have been made, Spillman reported. However, McCrossin said he had communicated with detectives assigned to the string of incidents and they have established leads.

Anyone with information about the crimes is urged to call the Los Altos Police Department at 947-2770; people wishing to remain anonymous can call the department’s tip line at 947-2774.
