Police charge man with animal cruelty

Los Altos police arrested a San Jose man at the Los Altos Whole Foods Market March 3 on felony charges of animal cruelty.

Witnesses contacted police when they saw Anthony Ortiz, 22, punching his dog in the parking lot of the store.

According to Sgt. Brian Jeffrey, Ortiz hit the 5-month-old puppy, which weighed approximately 10 pounds.

Ortiz picked up the dog by its leash and threw it into his open vehicle.

Palo Alto Animal Control took possession of the dog and sent it to Adobe Animal Hospital, where it was treated for a broken rear left femur. Ortiz was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
