Palo Alto cyclist dies following MV collision with car

A bicyclist struck by a car near the intersection of San Antonio Road and El Camino Real has died, Mountain View Police reported Thursday (July 16).

Palo Alto resident Eric Palmquist, 63, collided with a Honda Civic July 10 and succumbed to his injuries July 15, according to police and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office.

The driver of the car was not injured in the accident and has not been charged, police said.

The accident happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. Based on police investigations, it appears the Honda was traveling north on San Antonio Road and approaching the West El Camino Real intersection. Palmquist rode his bike west across San Antonio in front of the car and was struck and projected forward onto the pavement. The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Palmquist was not wearing a helmet and it appears he suffered a head injury, according to police. He was unconscious but breathing after the accident and EMTs transported him to a local hospital where his condition remained critical.

Witnesses reported seeing several motorists attending to the victim until law enforcement officials and medical personnel arrived. One witness responded to a Mountain View Police Department Facebook query for information by describing the accident as "horrific." He said the Civic's windshield and roof were caved in, and the vehicle appeared totaled.

Police officers are investigating the accident and encourage witnesses to call Officer Dan Garcia at 903-6344 and reference case number 15-3916.
