MVPD arrests man for soliciting minor for sex

Mountain View Police last week arrested a San Francisco man for allegedly soliciting sex from an undercover detective posing as a minor.

Mountain View Police detectives and the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team arrested 52-year-old Harlan Edelman Feb. 4 for distribution of sexually explicit electronic communications to a minor and for communicating with a minor with the intent of committing a sex crime.

Edelman is a teacher at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in San Francisco who took a leave of absence this year, according to police.

“The Mountain View Police Department takes all crimes seriously, especially those involving sexual predators,” said Mountain View Police Detective Sgt. Mike Canfield. “This investigation in particular is a great example of the dedication and hard work of our detectives and the commitment of our department to proactively fight crime.”

Edelman’s arrest came after he made unsolicited contact with a Mountain View Police detective posing as a 17-year-old male on a social networking website. Police allege that Edelman sent sexually explicit material to the undercover detective and later agreed to meet him in Mountain View, where the arrest took place.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the Mountain View Police Department at 903-6344.
