The city of Los Altos recently hired Sonia Lee to serve as its new public information officer.
Lee replaces Erica Ray, who resigned four months ago to take a position as public information manager for the San Jose Fire Department.
A San Jose State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in international business, Lee joined the city Jan. 27. She previously worked as a consultant for the San Jose-based digital marketing agency Bare Strategy and as a product marketing manager for Comprehend Systems in Redwood City.
Lee will use her background in communications and marketing strategies in her new role, according to a city press release, and will be responsible for “facilitating communication among elected officials, businesses, media and the community.”
Lee told the Town Crier she was interested in the position because she admires Los Altos’ commitment to community building.
“My passion has been and always will be to serve the community,” she said. “I knew this was a role where my skills could help further these values and goals.”
Lee’s first task is to learn the city’s methods and processes so that she can expand off of the framework to engage residents.
“Our digital footprint is essential in accomplishing this,” she said. “Increasing our reach through social media platforms, email lists and website updates is a goal we will need to improve on.”
Lee is being trained by management analyst fellow Trevor Marsden, who assumed Ray’s responsibilities upon her departure. There is no set date for when the responsibilities will be transferred over completely.
“Since my date of hire, I’ve been diligently educating myself on the history of Los Altos,” Lee said. “Over the coming weeks, I plan to integrate into existing efforts while assessing ways to develop more effective strategies, until I have the knowledge needed to serve the community.”
