Rotary Club of Los Altos volunteers support villagers in remote Yucatan

Two volunteers with the Rotary Club of Los Altos recently visited Mayan children on the Yucatan Peninsula, part of an ongoing partnership with the nongovernmental organization Proyecto Itzaes to provide education and basic necessities.

Many Los Altos families vacation in Cancun, but few have seen the poor Mayan villages along the Yucatan Peninsula. The Rotary Club of Los Altos set about to change that.

Members of the local Rotary Club have done more than visit the Yucatan area – they’ve pitched in to deliver books, computers, school supplies, LEGOs and smokeless cooking stoves to boost the quality of life in Mayan villages. Partnering with the nongovernmental organization Proyecto Itzaes, Rotarians have inspired a thirst for education among the Mayans and created a sense of community that didn’t previously exist in the remote villages.
