LA resident Thurber named senate district's Woman of the Year

State Sen. Jerry Hill named Los Altos resident Emily “Emy” Thurber, who has devoted more than 50 years to public service and women’s leadership, the 2019 Woman of the Year for the 13th Senate District.

The California Legislative Women’s Caucus honored Thurber March 4 at the State Capitol in Sacramento at ceremonies celebrating the Women of Year selected by legislative representatives throughout the state.

Tax help available for local seniors

The Los Altos Senior Program offers a complimentary tax-return preparation service Monday mornings through April 15.

Trained, IRS-certified volunteers meet with clients, review their tax forms and records, then prepare and electronically file both federal and California tax returns.

Los Altos ham radio operators participate in county drill

The Los Altos Amateur Radio Emergency Service (LAARES) participated in a Santa Clara County-wide drill using amateur radio emergency communications capabilities Feb. 23.

The amateur radio volunteers, also known as “hams,” communicated with the county Emergency Operations Center using voice radio calls and digital communications, akin to sending an email over the internet. As part of the drill, the hams visited various locations in the city of Los Altos to verify the coverage and capabilities of the recently installed radio repeaters funded by the city of Los Altos and the Los Altos Rotary Endowment Fund.

History Museum exhibition celebrates 90th anniversary of LA garden club

The Los Altos History Museum commemorates the contributions of the Garden Club of Los Altos with its upcoming exhibition, “90 Years of Flowers: Celebrating the Garden Club of Los Altos,” scheduled to run through April 28 at the J. Gilbert Smith House, 51 S. San Antonio Road.

The Garden Club is responsible for the original Pet Parade (now organized by the Los Altos Kiwanis Club), the Japanese tea garden that once graced Shoup Park and the daffodils along Main and State.

Santa Clara Valley Lives: Esther Williams, movie star and swimmer, married long ago in Los Altos

Swimmer and actress Esther Williams, shown in a vintage postcard circa 1952, eloped at 18 years old and married in Los Altos.

Esther Williams was a long-legged swimming champion, and so beautiful that MGM Studios signed her to a contract without even a screen test. In Hollywood, she became a star, swimming to fame in improbable movies MGM called “aquamusicals.”

Former Los Altos Hills fire commissioners honored

The Los Altos Hills County Fire Commission honored George K. Tyson and Michelle Wu for their contributions and service to the district at its monthly meeting Feb. 19.

After serving three years as president of the commission, the Santa Clara County Board of    Supervisors reappointed Tyson to another term. In 2018, he was elected to the Los Altos Hills City Council and will now represent the town on the commission along with Mayor Roger Spreen.

Wu resigned from the commission after serving one year. She also is a member of the Los Altos Hills City Council.
