AAUW Holiday Tea supports nonprofit group

Members of the Los Altos/Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women recently met for their annual Holiday Tea at the Los Altos home of Allyson Johnson.

In addition to enjoying coffee, Christmas treats and conversation, the group listened to a presentation from Lisa Blanchard, founder and director of the Grateful Garment Project.

Los Altans of Year event set for Jan. 14

A dinner and program honoring 2019 Los Altans of the Year Ed and Pamela Taft is scheduled 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at Los Altos Golf & Country Club, 1560 Country Club Drive.

Local nonprofit fighting child sex trafficking raises $112K at golf tourney

Los Altos-based Special Operations, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of child sex trafficking, raised $112,000 at its recent annual golf tournament and dinner fundraiser.

A Los Altos Hills resident who asked not to be identified due to safety concerns founded Special Operations in 2017 in an effort to stop sex trafficking of children in the Bay Area. She said the organization does this by investigating potential sex-trafficking cases, assisting in the search and rescue of young girls, and targeting sex traffickers. Special Operations also provides direct assistance to victims, such as paying for food, clothing and counseling.

Los Altos native James Lanman performs holiday songs at Filoli

Singer-songwriter James Lanman, a Los Altos native, has taken up residency at the historical Filoli estate for the holidays.

In his two-hour concerts, Lanman performs in the grand ballroom, showcasing songs from his new Christmas album, “Merry Christmas Darling,” as well as a mix of jazz standards and original music.

Women’s chorus seeks new members

The Community Women’s Chorus is open to new members.

The no-audition chorus practices in Palo Alto and sings to senior audiences in Los Altos, Mountain View and Palo Alto.

Acclaimed Chinese painter, Los Altos resident Hau featured in exhibition

The works of artists Susan Chan and Paul Hau are on display at the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center.

 

Internationally acclaimed painter Hau Beiren, also known as Paul Hau, has teamed with fellow painter Susan Chan on a new exhibition, “A Refined Pair,” featuring depictions of lotus and plum blossoms.
