The Los Altos Historical Commission and the Los Altos History Museum are co-sponsoring the 30th annual Margaret Thompson Historical Essay Contest, open to third- through sixth-graders who live in the area and/or attend local schools. Students who are home-schooled may also participate.
The theme of this year’s contest complements the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s “Project Los Altos: SFMOMA in Silicon Valley.”
The essay prompt: “Take a journey into your mind and imagine what would happen if your favorite work of art came alive. Describe an experience or adventure that happened one day. Within your writing, identify your work of art and tell where it is located.”
The deadline to submit essays to teachers or the Los Altos History Museum is March 7. Judging will occur the last weekend in March.
Three winners at each grade level will receive cash prizes: first place, $50; second, $30; and third, $20.
Winners will be notified the first week in May with a personal letter and an invitation to an ice cream social held on the History Museum’s patio May 13. Winners will receive their awards from Mayor Megan Satterlee later that evening at the Los Altos City Council meeting.
