The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women presented Laura Casas with its 39th Status of Women Award at a luncheon at Ristorante Don Giovanni in Mountain View May 18.
The association recognized Casas, member of the Foothill-De Anza Community College Board of Trustees, for her efforts in support of educating girls and young women, a focus AAUW shares.
Casas graduated from the HOPE Leadership Institute and serves on the boards of Children Now and ALearn and as a mentor for students in Puente, an academic preparation program.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Cal State Northridge. While living in Southern California, she helped establish a battered women’s shelter.
After relocating to Northern California, Casas earned a juris doctorate from Santa Clara University, married, raised children in local schools and was appointed to the Foothill-De Anza Community College District board in 2005. She was subsequently elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2012.
