Madrigals sing for Federated Woman’s Club
The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos has scheduled the Mountain View High School Madrigals to perform a medley of Christmas carols at its Dec. 5 meeting at Michaels at Shoreline, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.
A business meeting will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch and the Madrigals’ performance at 1 p.m.
Members are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift to donate to Help One Child, a local nonprofit organization that the club sponsors.

LA Library lecture reviews Louvre treasures
Fine-arts docent Kay Payne is scheduled to present illustrated lectures 7:30 p.m. today and Dec. 3 based on the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s exhibition “Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie Antoinette” in the Program Room of the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.
Payne will discuss the story of French royalty’s patronage and collections, which started in 1660 and ended with the French Revolution in 1789. Many of the objects in the exhibition have never before left France.
Items from the Louvre include a mosaic tabletop of agate, amethyst, lapis lazuli and other semiprecious stones; Louis XV’s collection of hard-stone vases; a tapestry from the royal mansion; a gold coffee grinder made for Madame Pompadour; a porcelain tea table for Madame du Barry; a miniature of Louis XIV framed in diamonds; and gilded walnut furniture from Marie Antoinette’s chambers.
The exhibition runs through March 17 at the Legion of Honor, 100 34th Ave., San Francisco.

City displays gingerbread houses
The Los Altos Recreation Department plans to display as many as 70 submissions during the city’s annual Gingerbread House Exhibit.
This year’s exhibit is scheduled 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Dec. 7 at Hillview Community Center, Room 2, 97 Hillview Ave.
Admission is free.

Museum features ‘Bear in Mind’ display
The Los Altos History Museum has scheduled “Bear in Mind: The Story of the California Grizzly,” on display through March 24.
According to exhibition organizers, scientists estimate that 10,000 grizzlies once roamed California.
However, through increased human settlement, loss of habitat and hunting, the grizzly vanished from the state by the early 1900s, today seen only on the state flag.
The Los Altos History Museum is located at 51 S. San Antonio Road. Admission is free. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

The 2012-2013 Foothill College Celebrity Forum Speakers Series runs through May at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts on the De Anza College campus in Cupertino.

SAy Hi helps local seniors
The SAy Hi Support Group offers assistance to seniors living in San Antonio Hills, the unincorporated area near Los Altos.
Volunteers provide free rides within a 20-minute drive, with 24 hours’ notice to destinations such as El Camino and Kaiser hospitals; beauty salons and barber shops; Rancho, Loyola Corners, downtown and local shopping centers; and religious services.
SAy Hi members meet 4 p.m. the third Monday of every month at First Republic Bank, 400 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos.
Valle Monte holiday event begins Thursday
Valle Monte League has scheduled “The Music of Christmas” in celebration of its 45th anniversary Thursday and Friday at the Doubletree Hotel, 2050 Gateway Place, San Jose.
Events include a morning coffee and afternoon tea Thursday and a champagne brunch Friday, all including fashion shows.
