The Los Altos Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has scheduled emergency response trainings 6-9 p.m. April 16, 23 and 30 and May 7 and 14 at Intero Real Estate Services, 496 First St., No. 200, Los Altos.
A graduation ceremony is slated May 31 at Los Altos Hills Town Hall, 26379 W. Fremont Road.
When disaster strikes, police, fire and medical personnel are usually overwhelmed for at least 72 hours, according to CERT organizers. CERT participants are trained to fill the void by caring for their families and neighbors.
The course is designed to be an informative, interactive learning experience. Session topics include disaster medicine, earthquake preparedness planning, damage assessment/search and rescue, disaster psychology, fire suppression and the Incident Command System.
Attendance at all sessions is required for certification. Teenagers are welcome to attend if signed up with their parents.
CERT is part of a nationwide program for disaster preparedness developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Service Corps. Los Altos Block Action Teams offer CERT training to minimize loss of life and property in the wake of a disaster. Block Action Teams are a program of the Los Altos Community Foundation.
The $95 cost includes five sessions, graduation, a CERT vest, a hard hat and a backpack with emergency supplies. A refresher course, without the backpack, costs $25 and is open to those who have previously taken the class.
