Los Altos Lutheran Church hosts its annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday, an event commemorating the legacy of St. Francis of Assisi, who urged stewardship of God’s creatures.

Los Altos Lutheran Church has scheduled its annual Blessing of the Animals service 10 a.m. Sunday on the outdoor lawn at 460 S. El Monte Ave.

The celebration of the Blessing of the Animals stems from the Christian teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th-century friar from Italy, whose love of animals, nature and the environment is commemorated in interfaith activities each October around the globe. St. Francis celebrated Christmas by setting up the first-known Nativity scene. He preached to man and beast about the universal ability and duty of all creatures to praise God – a common theme in the Psalms – and the duty of men to protect and enjoy nature as both the stewards of God’s creation and as creatures ourselves.

This year’s activities will include a parade of animals before the service and a presentation by Humane Society Silicon Valley’s Bridget Keenan, who will collect an offering for the Humane Society. Make checks payable to “Humane Society Silicon Valley.” Canine guests will receive treats from Five Paw Dog Treats.

After the service, children can enjoy pony rides, animal balloons and pet rocks made by the children of the congregation.

After the festivities, organizers will lead a dog-walk through the neighborhood.

Organizers recommend that attendees bring their own lawn chairs.
