Emergency preparedness courses available

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is open to Los Altos and Los Altos Hills volunteers willing to help their neighbors in the aftermath of a major disaster.

The next Los Altos CERT course is scheduled 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Sept. 11-27 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., with a final class exercise and graduation set for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 29.

LA Library hosts Chinese Film Festival

The Los Altos Library is scheduled to host a Chinese Film Festival 7:30 p.m. Saturdays in September and October in the Orchard Room of the main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

The screenings are part of the fifth annual Across the Pacific – China Arts Festival, organized by the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco.

LAUMC, Ashoka team up to help kids 'thrive' in Friday workshop

If we want a new generation of effective leaders and changemakers, we have to offer our youth the opportunity. That’s the theme behind “Your Kids Can Thrive,” a workshop scheduled 6:30 p.m. Friday at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave.

The church is hosting the event in partnership with Ashoka, an international nonprofit group that supports social entrepreneurship. Ashoka representatives have been collaborating with leaders at Los Altos United Methodist Church since April to train a group of changemaker fellows charged with effecting positive change in the community.

Day of meditation offered in Los Altos

Insight Meditation South Bay has scheduled a day of mindfulness meditation 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Foothills Congregational Church Parish Hall, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos.

The event offers the opportunity for meditators to deepen their practice with a program of alternating sitting and walking meditations, guided meditations, reflections and teachings. Shaila Catherine, founder of the nonprofit Insight Meditation, will present teachings aimed at developing meditative skills, exploring the Buddha’s teachings or strengthening mindfulness and concentration.

Community Briefs: Week of Aug. 15

GreenTown, LACI host scavenger hunt

GreenTown Los Altos and Los Altos Community Investments have scheduled a scavenger hunt 4:30 p.m. Saturday on the Downtown Green, the pop-up park on Third Street between Main and State streets in Los Altos.

The hunt is designed for youth ages 5-13. Participants will be divided into five teams, who will receive maps with clues that require visits to various downtown locations. The winning team and all participants will earn prizes.
