Concerts benefit Lighthouse for Blind

The 17th annual benefit concerts for the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, “The 1950s – When Broadway Ruled,” are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and 13 at Spieker Ballroom on the Menlo School campus, 50 Valparaiso Ave., Atherton.

The concerts will include selections from “Guys and Dolls,” “The Sound of Music,” “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story” and “The King and I.”

Course helps residents become local ‘LEAD’-ers

Los Altos Community Foundation is accepting applications for its 2019 Leadership Education Advancement program.

Designed for local residents and business owners who want to make a difference in the community, the LEAD course provides an in-depth introduction to Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. In 10 interactive classes, participants learn about the municipal, nonprofit, school, hospital and business groups that drive the community and meet the organizations’ leaders.

Dinner honors Los Altan of the Year

The Town Crier has named Los Altos resident Dennis Young, a community volunteer for more than four decades, its Los Altan of the Year for 2018.

Young, 75, has been deeply involved in community volunteerism since the 1980s. He’s been active in everything from the Rotary Club of Los Altos to the Community Health Awareness Council and Los Altos Community Foundation.

The Town Crier has named Los Altos resident Dennis Young, a community volunteer for more than four decades, its Los Altan of the Year for 2018.

Young, 75, has been deeply involved in community volunteerism since the 1980s. He’s been active in everything from the Rotary Club of Los Altos to Community Services Agency and its mission to help those in need. He’s used his accounting expertise to crunch the numbers for countless political candidates and their campaigns. He’s served as master of ceremonies for the annual awards luncheon honoring other community volunteers. And he’s even played Santa at the Festival of Lights Parade.

Jazz singer performs at Immanuel Lutheran

Jazz singer Jamie Davis is scheduled to perform two concerts at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1715 Grant Road, Los Altos.

The shows – dubbed “Jamie Builds!” – are a benefit for Habitat for Humanity.

LAUMC offers reflective Advent service

Los Altos United Methodist Church has scheduled “The Longest Night: A Service of Solace” 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in the sanctuary, 655 Magdalena Ave.

The Advent service, designed for those not feeling the holiday spirit, will offer a space of peace, reflection and comfort in a busy and sometimes difficult season. According to organizers, those who are grieving or feeling overwhelmed, tired, anxious or stressed may find the service helpful, but all are invited to experience an hour of candlelit prayer, meditation, music and a brief message.
