Local author Donald McPhail is scheduled to celebrate his latest release 7 p.m. Thursday at Books Inc., 317 Castro St., Mountain View.
“The Guest from Johannesburg,” a sequel to McPhail’s “The Millionaire’s Cruise,” is both an anti-war novel and a love story. With the backdrop of the Pacific wars – World War II, Korea and Vietnam – readers follow the lives of a South African Pan American World Airways executive and his wife, a heroic nurse. Set in Hawaii, Asia and South Africa, the historical novel offers hope as it takes on the horrors of war.
McPhail, a Mountain View resident, was born in Chile and raised in Palo Alto. He attended Menlo College, the U.S Naval Academy and San Francisco State University. He worked 40 years as a marketing executive in the airline and hospitality industries, and has devoted nearly 20 years to fundraising and governance for Sonoma’s Hanna Boys Center.
