The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded three fellowships to local students to attend the AAUW-sponsored National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.
Tiffany Nguyen and Shauna “Honu” Nichols, both students at Foothill College, and Genevieve Kolar, a De Anza College student, will participate in the conference, scheduled May 27-30 at the University of Maryland.
Nguyen serves as the student representative from Foothill College on the Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees. She is the first in her family born in the U.S. and the first in her family to attend college. She is founder of Yello, a youth-led media organization for Asian-American/Pacific Islander advocacy.
Nichols, active in the Foothill-De Anza Political Action Committee, is working for passage of measures G and H, which will provide funding for facilities and program upgrades at the community colleges. A political science major, she plans to attend law school.
Kolar serves as the student representative from De Anza College on the Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees. She is majoring in liberal arts with a math/science track and plans to pursue a career in data analytics. At De Anza, she has worked with student government and with the Vasconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action to make housing for students a board priority and to make emergency funds and other resources available to homeless students.
For Nguyen and Nichols, attendance at the conference will mark their first visit to the East Coast. Before or after the conference, all three awardees hope to be able to spend a few extra days touring Washington, D.C.
The AAUW fellowships include room and board as well as attendance at all conference meetings. The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is providing airfare for the students.
