Los Altos resident Carol Novello, president of Humane Society Silicon Valley the past 10 years, recently stepped down from the position to move across the country to spend more time with family.
Kurt Krukenberg, former HSSV board chairman, succeeded Novello as president, effective Jan. 6.
Novello, author of “Mutual Rescue: How Adopting a Homeless Animal Can Save You, Too,” released last year, will continue to stay connected to HSSV. She’s joining the nonprofit organization’s Board Alumni Ambassadors as well as serving as an advocate and spokeswoman for Mutual Rescue, HSSV’s national animal-welfare initiative.
“I deeply love this organization and all of the people who collectively come together to accomplish such amazing outcomes for both animals and people in Silicon Valley and beyond,” Novello said. “Kurt’s deep love of our mission combined with his business acumen and emotional intelligence, in addition to being a fellow Harvard Business School graduate, make him a natural choice for this role. I am confident he will continue to build upon the incredible foundation that so many people have worked with me and prior leaders to forge over the years.”
Prior to HSSV, Krukenberg spent 20 years helping companies create sustainable growth in a variety of operating and advisory roles.
“I am thrilled to step into this role at a time when HSSV has both a strong foundation of existing capabilities and an ambitious strategic plan to further expand our mission impact,” he said. “We have a world-class facility with equally impressive people and programs.”
Support from the community allowed HSSV to make investments in shelter operations, shelter medicine and collaborative partnerships, Krukenberg said, which enable “us to continue to be a safety net for our local community and pilot innovative new programs here in Silicon Valley while also expanding our support of other shelters to drive change at the regional and national levels. I look forward to sharing more in the future as we move ahead with these strategic initiatives.”
He expressed gratitude for Novello’s service as HSSV president.
“I am grateful beyond words for Carol’s extraordinary leadership over the past decade and her unwavering commitment to HSSV’s success,” he said. “It’s inspiring to see everything HSSV has accomplished with the support of our amazing staff, dedicated volunteers and generous donors. Carol has brought and taught amazing leadership skills during her time here at HSSV.”
