The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women is scheduled to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade court decision legalizing abortion 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.
The event will include remarks from reproductive rights activists, who will address continuing concerns about women’s access to health care, and a cake celebrating the landmark 1972 U.S. Supreme Court decision.
The program is set to begin at noon, with audience-participation “political theater” featuring Supreme Court justices Brett Kavanaugh and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, portrayed by the Raging Grannies of the Peninsula.
Speaker Dr. Emily Guh of Asian Health Services in Oakland will discuss reproductive justice and how attacks on women’s health services particularly affect immigrant and minority women nationwide.
Dr. Sophia Yen, associate professor of pediatric and adolescent medicine at Stanford Hospital, will give an update on emergency contraception, bringing birth control opportunities to women through the internet and the latest developments in reproductive health.
Following the indoor event, participants will rally in front of the Los Altos Civic Center on San Antonio Road, with placards and a large banner reading “Happy Birthday Roe v. Wade.”
Co-sponsors of the program include the Palo Alto AAUW, the Sunnyvale-Cupertino AAUW, the Mtn. View-Los Altos League of Women Voters, the Palo Alto League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood Mar Monte.
A registration fee of $5 to defray expenses will be charged at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
