• Mission: The MERIT (Making Education Relevant and Interactive through Technology) program is the Krause Center for Innovation’s premier technology-focused professional development initiative for teachers. MERIT’s mission is to promote innovation with technology, pedagogy and content that will have a measurable, positive impact on education in Silicon Valley and beyond. The 10-month program includes a kick-off day, a two-week intensive summer institute and four follow-up sessions. Concurrent with the MERIT curriculum, participants are also required to take additional courses at the Krause Center for Innovation.
• 2018 update: The MERIT 2018 cohort comprised 44 teachers, representing 24 school districts in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and Contra Costa counties, as well as two teachers from outside the Bay Area.
“Simply put: A defibrillator for my teaching career,” one MERIT 2018 participant called the program.
Participants created multiple projects throughout the year using digital media they could bring back to their own classrooms, and received explicit training on how to share the best practices they’d learned with other teachers at their schools.
After the summer institute, 100 percent of program participants agreed or strongly agreed that MERIT showed them how to facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.
• Why the Holiday Fund is needed: The MERIT program offers approximately 50 teachers intensive coursework each year and shares the cost of tuition with the teachers.
Teachers are also provided a $1,200 stipend and a tool or app to support their teaching.
Donations from the Holiday Fund go directly to the teachers’ work in touching the lives of their students and inspiring fellow teachers at their home schools.
