• Mission: Mentor Tutor Connection aims to enhance the academic and life skills of local youth through individualized volunteer tutoring and mentoring.

• 2018 update: MTC received what Executive Director Padma Gargeya described as “a generous grant” from Google Inc. that helped fund the nonprofit organization’s new strategic plan.

MTC hired a strategic planner in the spring to set priorities and goals for the next four years.

Goals include a 40 percent increase in mentoring, according to Gargeya, along with moving toward making MTC a fully staff-run organization. Gargeya said MTC also wants to build an alumni database to track its success stories, like the Los Altos High School graduate from a difficult home situation who found a job that’s helped him pay for college.

“He’s a great kid – very motivated,” Gargeya said.

• Why the Holiday Fund is needed: Donations to Mentor Tutor Connection go toward paying staff members, which Gargeya said is “a significant piece of our budget.”

The money will also help fund program activities, training and development for staff.
