Community Services Agency not only needs volunteers during the holiday season – the local nonprofit organization also seeks year-round help.
CSA, which serves Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View residents in need, faces a shortage of long-term volunteers.
“The problem is that we have urgent needs for volunteers in a couple of different areas because we need more than just volunteers to come in one day a week and serve food, or volunteers to come in and stack groceries,” CSA Executive Director Tom Myers said.
CSA provides food and other assistance to the homeless, seniors and those in the community who need a helping hand. The organization recently expanded its food pantry program to include a mobile unit to meet the growing demand.
With that comes a demand for more volunteers – especially those who can help on a consistent basis.
“We do have some people who come and volunteer for periods of time when they’re looking for jobs,” CSA volunteer coordinator LaDrea Clark said. “But then when they get jobs, I mean, they’re great while they’re here, but when they get jobs, then, of course, they cannot volunteer anymore because their time is being taken working.”
That’s why CSA is putting out an urgent call for volunteers willing to undergo training and spend time helping at the agency. They hope that especially during the holiday season, the people most in need of assistance can receive the care and resources they deserve.
“Now we seem to be running on a 24/7 clock,” said Myers, a Los Altos resident. “And I think we have more and more people who just don’t have the time to come in and volunteer, or don’t think they have the time to come in and volunteer.”
CSA encourages people to volunteer throughout the year on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.
“It is very fulfilling to volunteer,” Clark said. “And it would just be much appreciated to get any help we can in the community to help CSA get the help that the clients need.”
CSA is located at 204 Stierlin Road, Mountain View. To volunteer and for more information, call 968-0836 or visit csacares.org.
