Some participants in this year’s Fun Run joined in the spirit of the “Star Wars” theme by dressing up as iconic characters from the franchise – a few stormtroopers were seen jogging around.

Aided by unseasonably dry weather, the city of Los Altos’ New Year’s Day Fun Run went smoothly, organizers said, with approximately 800 people participating in the annual event.

Dubbed the “Rogue Run: Episode II,” the 3.1-mile run through downtown Los Altos featured a “Star Wars” theme for the second straight year.

“We had more people wear ‘Star Wars’ costumes this year,” said Los Altos recreation supervisor Bridget Matheson. “It was a fantastic way to ring in the new year.”

The event was launched as informal and noncompetitive, but two Los Altos High School students finished the 5K run with impressive times. Sophomore Dadmehr Daniels Ghasemfar finished in 17 minutes, 57 seconds, followed closely by freshman Kevin Andrews at 17:58.

Event sponsors included Trader Joe’s, A Runner’s Mind and the Los Altos Village Association.

Volunteers from Los Altos High and the Decathlon Club and local ham radio operators aided city staff in putting on the event.

Members of the Los Altos Police Department also provided support.
