• Mission: Sunday Friends empowers families to break the generational cycle of poverty by fostering positive development in children while educating and guiding parents to support their children’s life success.
• 2017 update: Sunday Friends has expanded to a third site at Meadows Elementary School. in San Jose. Alongside its current activities and classes at Lowell and Santee schools, the organization serves 50 additional families.
In addition to Sunday Friends’ usual classes on parenting, financial literacy, English fluency, nutrition and health, the program now includes more academic and science, technology, engineering and math activities for kids.
Every Sunday, children can participate in two or more hands-on science projects and experiments, including their weekly Computer Education for Families and Children class.
Parent engagement remains Sunday Friends’ top priority.
• Why the Holiday Fund is needed: Participating families earn credit through classwork and service projects, which they can use to “purchase” basic necessities such as school and cleaning supplies and baby-care products.
In the past, Sunday Friends helped participants earn credits to pay rent, but funding for the program was cut this year.
With rapidly rising housing costs in the region, multiple families have had to move in together to make ends meet.
Paying rent is one of the top stressors in these families’ lives, according to the nonprofit.
