Families receive special back-to-school donations

Local students collect free backpacks and school supplies last week at the Community Services Agency’s back-to-school event.

Dozens of children and their parents streamed into the Community Services Agency (CSA) in Mountain View Aug. 13 to accept back-to-school gifts – backpacks, school supplies and $20 vouchers for the purchase of new shoes.

Approximately 500 local elementary through high school students received supplies. To qualify for the program, families must be registered CSA clients with incomes that verify their need.

“I’m very happy with the service,” said the mother of two children who picked up backpacks last week. “It is a big help for them. They can be excited to go back to school.”

Donations from area technology companies support the annual back-to-school program. Volunteers and a financial contribution from Google Inc. made this year’s program possible.

In addition to backpacks in various colors and styles, students received notebooks, ruled paper and their choice of another school item – pencils, glue sticks, vocabulary study cards or crayons.
