Rotary Club of Los Altos honors Simitian for service

The Rotary Club of Los Altos honored Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian as a Paul Harris Fellow for living the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

At the club’s 65th anniversary luncheon, held at Los Altos Golf & Country Club March 6, Rotary past presidents Dennis Young, Mary Prochnow and Roy Lave highlighted the contributions Simitian has made to the community through his service as state senator and assemblyman, mayor of Palo Alto, Palo Alto School Board president and county supervisor, among other roles.

Current Rotary Club of Los Altos President Jack Kelly said Simitian has developed “social capital” that benefits the entire community. Rick King, former president of Rotary International, was on hand for the event.

Paul Harris Fellows honored worldwide include humanitarian Mother Teresa, Luciano Pavarotti, Mayo Clinic founder Dr. Charles Mayo, inventor of the wireless radio Guglielmo Marconi, explorer Admiral Richard Byrd, novelist Thomas Mann, astronaut Frank Borman, composer Franz Lehar and Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

“This is the only time in my life that the names of Mother Teresa and Joe Simitian have been uttered in the same sentence,” Simitian joked.

The Rotary Club of Los Altos meets 12:15 p.m. Thursdays in the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. For more information, visit losaltosrotary.org.
