New Year's Day 5K Fun Run draws crowd downtown

NOEL/SPECIAL TO THE TOWN CRIER On your mark, get set, go: Approximately 1,200 participated in the New Year’s Day Fun Run. The top finishers include, from left, Tori Lucca and Sarah Robinson.

With early-morning temperatures in the low 40s, the sponsors setting up food and beverages for the New Year’s Day Fun Run were the only people milling about Community Plaza in downtown Los Altos at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 1.

At 8:50 a.m., however, participants arrived in droves to begin stretching for the 12th annual run. When the run began at 9 a.m., an estimated 1,200 runners, walkers and strollers embarked on the 5K course, starting at Main and State streets and circling the downtown triangle three times.

The Fun Run is open to all ages and dogs on leash, prompting Tamara Oskoui, recreation coordinator for the Los Altos Recreation Department, to direct participants before the starting gun: “Faster runners keep to the left, and runners with dogs keep those extended leashes in.”

Sarah Robinson of Los Altos Hills, a senior at Gunn High School, crossed the finish line first with a time at 17 minutes, 44 seconds, closely followed by Tori Lucca of Mountain View. Mike Galler of Los Altos finished third and Dave Richards of Sunnyvale came in fourth.

Robinson, an All-American cross-country runner and soccer player, has secured a scholarship to Stanford University to play the latter.

The Braun family of Katonah, N.Y., traveled the farthest to participate.
