The Los Altos Village Association (LAVA) hopes that distribution of holiday tree ornaments will elicit donations to cover the costs of the downtown merchant group’s annual events.
LAVA plans to hand out 1,000 ornaments with a request for donations to the Los Altos Village Fund. The fund is operated through the nonprofit Los Altos Community Foundation to qualify the contributions as tax deductible.
LAVA Executive Director Nancy Dunaway said rising costs make it harder to budget for the group’s various events, most notably the annual Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival. The popular Breakfast with Santa event, sponsored by LAVA at various downtown restaurants, has been canceled this year.
LAVA hosts Holiday Carriage Rides, the Halloween Spooktacular, the Easter Egg Hunt and summer outdoor movie nights. LAVA also pays for the holiday lights and flowers lining downtown streets.
“We thought this was a cute way of getting attention,” Dunaway said of the small wooden ornaments.
Two LAVA board members funded the project.
Dunaway said approximately 300 have already been distributed at the LAVA-sponsored Holiday Stroll and Holiday Tree Lighting.
The ornaments will be available during the carriage rides, scheduled Dec. 13-15, 20-23 and 26. The remainder will be mailed to LAVA members.
