When the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s Project Los Altos opens in November, the Los Altos History Museum plans to curate an exhibition that offers local contemporary artists the opportunity to simultaneously display their work.

The History Museum and the Los Altos Art Commission issued a call for artists from Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View to participate in “Los Altos Moving Art Forward,” slated Nov. 2 through March 23. Artists must apply. Committee members will cull submissions to select artwork for display. A jury will award ribbons and choose a best-of-show winner.

Jane Reed, History Museum board president and chairwoman of the Exhibit Committee, noted that the idea emerged in response to local artists wondering how they could get involved in the SFMOMA project. Although the History Museum routinely hosts exhibitions spotlighting local history, the opportunity to include artists appealed to the museum and the Arts Commission – whose members will help coordinate the show.

“We have no art museum in the city,” Reed said. “This is our contribution to the community’s focus on arts.”

The application deadline is Sept. 23.
