Editorial: City-school partnership welcome

The Los Altos School District and the city of Mountain View are to be commended for cementing a partnership last week that will likely lead to establishing a 10th school site in the city’s San Antonio neighborhood.

Many hurdles lie ahead, including a potential legal fight from the preferred site’s current owners, but we appreciate two of our major local agencies coming together to address the projected growth and resulting needs of the area.

We see this as perhaps the last opportunity, given the economic climate, for the district to purchase additional land. Some creative zoning maneuvers will generate money for the purchase and reduce the impact on Measure N bond funds.

Using the current flat school district enrollment figures as an argument against purchasing land is shortsighted. The partnership is linked to looking years ahead. With our populations trending significantly up, not down, this is responsible planning, not wasteful spending.

We offer our approval on the condition that the new school site serve students in the San Antonio area, given that the projected student growth will originate there. This is the only option that really makes sense to us.
