Bitcoin: The worst-performing investment of the year

This year has not been kind to most investment asset classes.

U.S. stocks are negative for the year, international stocks (particularly in emerging markets) have been clobbered, commodities are down and even bonds have been unable to provide a positive return. Coming on the heels of 2017, one of the best years for all asset classes, 2018 feels that much more painful.

Modern recipes meet old-world traditions in new Italian eatery

Tre Monti, an Italian restaurant, is scheduled to officially open at 270 Main St. in early January. Mattia Galiano, Mario Nucci and Giovanni Messina partnered on the eatery to bring traditional Italian cooking to Los Altos.

Just after Christmas, three business partners who hail from the same coastal region in Southern Italy will open the doors to their new Los Altos restaurant, Tre Monti, with a grand event featuring a full buffet.

A small group including the owners, a server, family friends and a Town Crier reporter gathered Nov. 27 to share a pre-opening meal at Tre Monti, located at 270 Main. St., former home to Miyo Yogurt.

Google pays $1 billion for remaining buildings in MV business park

A Google Inc. representative last week confirmed that the company paid approximately $1 billion for the remaining buildings Google did not yet occupy in the Britannia Shoreline Technology Park in Mountain View, former home to LinkedIn Corp.

The business park, directly across the street from the Googleplex headquarters, comprises 12 buildings. According to Google’s Maps system, which has not yet been updated to reflect the purchase, Google already owned 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2081 Stierlin Court. The only building the company doesn’t own in the complex houses Alexza Pharmaceuticals.

Peninsula Center of Cosmetic Dentistry hosts 'Smiles for Troops' event

The Peninsula Center of Cosmetic Dentistry hosted its sixth annual “Smiles for Troops” event in honor of Veterans Day. Across its three locations – one in Los Altos and two in Mountain View – staff provided free dental services to 35 veterans Nov. 12.

Dentists and hygienists not only offered cleanings, fillings, crowns and root canals to the vets, but also focused on prevention of major problems related to oral health – and helped veterans regain their “confidence with a smile,” said office manager Janna York.
