Ike’s Love & Sandwiches founder Ike Shehadeh welcomes customers at the grand opening of his new location in Mountain View last week.

The line was 15 people deep when Ike’s Love & Sandwiches opened at 10 a.m. By lunchtime, it nearly stretched out the door of the Mountain View restaurant.

Whether attracted by the chance to claim one of 50 free sandwiches or by the opportunity to meet founder Ike Shehadeh himself, hundreds of Bay Area residents attended last week’s grand-opening celebration for the newest tenant of the Rengstorff Center.

Accounting firm moves from Los Altos office after 25 years

The accounting firm Knight & Co. recently moved to 419 S. San Antonio Road after 25 years at 425 First St.

Knight & Co. Certified Public Accounts has made a move, but it didn’t go far. The firm remains in downtown Los Altos, recently relocating just a few blocks away from the building it occupied for 25 years.

Firm partner and longtime Los Altos resident Kamrin Knight Desmond said she and her colleagues “absolutely loved” their former space at 425 First St., and their lease with developer Jeff Warmoth – who purchased the property a year ago – wasn’t set to expire until December 2020. But the building’s continued history of water leaks – a problem Warmoth said he was always vigilant about addressing – and the city’s 2018 decision to approve the building’s overhaul into a three-story, 20-unit multifamily housing complex prompted Knight & Co. to expedite the move.

Calculating capital gains, property taxes on homes

I receive a lot of questions about capital gains and property taxes – rightfully so, as they are complicated. Let me start off with a disclaimer: I am neither an accountant nor an attorney.

Ristorante reversal: From Bella Vita to La Scala

Megan V. Winslow/Town Crier
Ristorante Bella Vita closed July 10 after Jan Unlu had a falling out with his business partner. However, Unlu said he plans to reopen under a new name: Ristorante La Scala.

Jan Unlu said things “didn’t work out” between him and his business partner, leading to a temporary closure of downtown mainstay Ristorante Bella Vita July 10. But much to the relief of the restaurant’s regulars, Ristorante Bella Vita is set to reopen in a few weeks under a new name: Ristorante La Scala.

Unlu, who declined to identify his former business partner, sees the restaurant’s renaming and remodeling as a fresh start. His original plan for this year, already in the works, was to open a European eatery on Main Street called Los Altos Bakery & Cafe that would offer something for nearly everyone: organic brunch foods, freshly ground espresso and an assortment of wines. Now, he has put his cafe plans on hold just one week before he was set to sign the lease.
