With home improvement projects becoming a quarantine trend, hardware stores have emerged as one of the few thriving businesses during the pandemic – and there will soon be another place to buy tools, garden supplies and the like in Los Altos.

Ace Hardware is coming to the Foothill Crossing Shopping Center.

Scheduled to open in September, the store is currently undergoing interior renovations and installations, according to co-owner Richard Crevelt. Located between Rite Aid and Springwood Apartment Homes Leasing Center, Ace will replace KinderCare Learning Centers. The conventional store size of roughly 10,000 square feet will include a garden center and full rental equipment services as well as Ace Rewards and online services such as setup and delivery.

The opportunity to open the store came about when Crevelt, a general contractor from Portola Valley, happened upon the vacant space while visiting the shopping center on Homestead Road. Already seeking a spot to open another hardware store – he and business partner Stig Nybo own Portola Valley Hardware and Aptos Valley Hardware – Crevelt said he contacted the property owner and they came to a lease agreement.

Although initially concerned about having enough parking, Crevelt said that fear was alleviated by a plan to offer rear access to the store, an area in which employees will park as well.
Crevelt added that they plan to hire upward of 20 employees.

He and Nybo intend to run the business like they do their other hardware stores.

“We’re very community oriented and very involved in activities supporting and sponsoring schools and local charities, which we do through all of our stores,” Crevelt said. “This comes at a very opportune time to support the community at large.”

When it opens in the fall, Ace will be the second hardware store in Los Altos. The other, Los Altos Hardware, is across town on First Street.

According to Crevelt, a detailed market analysis found that many of their customers will come from the south side of Los Altos, along with parts of Cupertino and Mountain View.

Joost Mortelmans, who lives nearby the new Ace, looks forward to having a hardware store in the neighborhood.

“Ace Hardware has many products, and it is great that they are now closer,” he said, “and (it’s) convenient that it is next to Foothill Produce and Trader Joe’s.”

Ace Hardware is located at 2310 Homestead Road, Suite E, in Foothill Crossing.
