Mountain View leaders to update state of the city under theme ‘Hope in View’

The 2021 city of Mountain View update, often called the annual “state of the city” address, is scheduled as a virtual event 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Hosted by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce and the city of Mountain View, this year’s event will be broadcast live and at no charge to the public. The program will feature updates from Mayor Ellen Kamei and City Manager Kimbra McCarthy.

With the theme “Hope in View,” the update will touch on the city’s COVID-19 response and what city officials call “aggressive plans” to help businesses as the pandemic surpasses the one-year mark.

Kamei said she is excited to share the many ways the city is helping the business community overcome the hardships of the past 12 months and beyond.

“I am inspired by our community’s resilience despite this challenging time,” she said. “My city council colleagues and I have continued to support our local businesses throughout this public health emergency in partnership with the chamber. I look forward to sharing the city’s path forward at the city annual update, as we have much to look forward to in the coming months.”

McCarthy will provide an overview of the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the innovations delivered by employees to provide services virtually. She also will highlight the efforts underway to create the city’s first strategic plan.

“Through the incredible and tireless efforts of our employees, the city of Mountain View quickly adapted to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,” McCarthy said. “These past 12 months, we’ve been there for the community through our COVID-19 relief efforts, virtual programming and essential services. Now, we are ready to serve up hope in 2021.”

Chamber president and CEO Peter Katz will serve as moderator of a panel discussion featuring Kamei, McCarthy, Tiffany Chew from the city’s economic development office and Dr. Mark Adams, chief medical officer at El Camino Health.

“Although this year’s event won’t take place in person, the virtual format allows us to connect with not only the business community, but also everyone who cares about Mountain View,” Katz said. “They can join us safely and conveniently from wherever they are.”

Event sponsors include Google Inc., Intuit Inc., Aurora Inc. and El Camino Health.
