St. Simon Catholic Church has scheduled its annual rummage sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 1860 Grant Road, Los Altos.
Proceeds from the sale, which at past events have exceeded $30,000, support various causes.
In addition to serving bargain hunters, St. Simon invites two dozen charities to “shop” for free at the sale for everything from newborn clothing to rape crisis kits.
Families identified and referred by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and other agencies can pick out clothing and household-based items.
After the rummage sale ends, remaining items are packed and donated to charities such as Operation Christmas Child, the Good Samaritan Program and the Salvation Army.
According to organizers, the sale has benefits beyond the traditional commercial enterprise. Families that volunteer to work the sale bring laborers as young as 2 years old to learn to carry an empty box across a room and experience what it means to do service. Others working the sale, in their 90s, have participated since its earliest days.
