Bookstore reopens after summer hiatus

A State Street retailer is open once again – albeit with a few changes.

Know Knew Books at 366 State St. reopened its doors Oct. 1 under new management and with a new staff, nearly two months after temporarily closing for unspecified reasons.

Reached by the Town Crier, Cate Nelson said she’s taken over managing the day-to-day operations of the bookstore, which relocated to Los Altos approximately a year ago after a 24-year stay on Palo Alto’s California Avenue. Two years ago, Nelson became co-owner of the store with founder Bill Burruss, who ran the store prior to its August closure.

Nelson declined to offer specifics behind the management change, but noted that she’s now the “sole manager” of the business. Nelson said she’s pleased to see the business up and running once again.

“I feel great about it,” said Nelson, who reopened the store with a new three-member staff. “There are a lot of things I was able to do with the store that I wasn’t able to do before.”

Nelson noted that she’s added some new elements to the business – such as installing more jewelry displays – in a bid to diversify the store’s offerings. In addition, Nelson said the store is offering small antiques, gift items and other “unusual things.” Other changes include enlarged children’s and young-adult book sections.

The store also features revised hours of operation, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

“It’s not a major change. … We still have all kinds of books about almost anything,” Nelson said.

One aspect that will remain is the store’s willingness to be a “community resource” to others, Nelson said. Specifically, the store will continue to serve as a local venue for book signings, poetry and book readings, and in-store musical performances, among other things. Pet adoption events, she added, will eventually return as well.

“It’s a wonderful place for these (events) to happen,” Nelson said. “And there needs to be a place for these things to happen.”
